The Orange County Makapo Aquatics Project just took a major step forward in adaptive paddling. In a moving ceremony at the Newport Aquatic Center, the team christened a new custom-built double-hull wa‘a (canoe) designed specifically for athletes with disabilities. Outfitted with thoughtful modifications—including accessible seating and accommodations for visual or cognitive needs—the canoe reflects Makapo’s mission to make paddling more inclusive and empowering.

One standout paddler is Janet Wu, a former college athlete and spinal cord injury survivor. Since joining Makapo, she’s made the long drive from the San Gabriel Valley to train with the team, and her commitment has earned her not only the respect of her teammates but also a surprise gift: her very own single-seater outrigger canoe.

The newly christened canoe, Marco Polo, will make its race debut at the Crystal Pier Outrigger Race in San Diego on May 3. Makapo’s Executive Director RJ De Rama says the organization hopes to reach over 700 athletes this year and expand their inclusive paddling model to clubs around the world.
