A celebration of community, courage, and supporting the next wave of cancer adventures!
The Newport Aquatic Center’s We Are Ocean program welcomed supporters, survivors, families, and community partners to its annual Sea of Support Fundraiser Gala—an evening dedicated to fueling life‑changing adventure experiences for those affected by cancer. Held on April 25, 2026, at the NAC in Newport Beach, the event brought together an inspiring blend of generosity, storytelling, and ocean‑driven purpose.
Leadership at the Helm
The evening was guided by MC Mark Schulein, whose warmth and energy set the tone for a night of purpose and celebration. Co‑hosts Danny Kwock and Bob Hurley brought their signature passion and dedication to the stage, welcoming guests and championing the mission of We Are Ocean throughout the program.

Honoring Leaders Who Inspire the Movement
This year’s gala recognized two remarkable Guests of Honor—Richard Woolcott and Chris Carter—whose leadership and support have helped expand We Are Ocean’s reach and impact. Their contributions reflect the spirit of the program: resilience, adventure, and the belief that healing can happen in motion, in nature, and in community.
An Evening of Music, Stories, and Purpose
Guests were welcomed by the soulful voice of Grace Allen upon arrival, and live performances by The Reef Brothers with special guest Phil Marshall created a vibrant soundtrack for the celebration. The program featured powerful remarks from two longtime champions of ocean‑driven healing:
Shaun Tomson, world champion surfer and inspirational speaker, shared his message of courage, purpose, and the power of personal commitment. Every attendee received a copy of his book, Surfer’s Code, as a reminder to carry those principles forward.
Paul Naudé, industry leader and steadfast supporter of We Are Ocean, spoke about the transformative impact of adventure, community, and connection for those navigating life after cancer.
Their words grounded the evening in meaning, reminding guests why this mission matters.

A Transformational Gift: John Wayne Cancer Foundation Sponsors a Camp
A highlight of the night was the announcement that the John Wayne Cancer Foundation generously contributed $60,000 to sponsor an entire We Are Ocean camp. This extraordinary gift directly supports a full multi‑day ocean adventure experience for cancer fighters and survivors—providing paddling, surfing, sailing, mindfulness, and community connection at no cost to participants.
A Night of Impact: $175,000 Raised
Thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsors, families, and friends, the Sea of Support Gala raised an incredible $175,000. These funds directly fuel We Are Ocean’s mission—expanding camps, enhancing local day adventures, supporting the Alumni Channel Crossing, and ensuring that every participant experiences the healing power of the ocean.
Fueling the Mission Through Sponsorship and Giving
Guests had the opportunity to make a direct impact through several meaningful sponsorship levels, including:
$60,000 – Sponsor the Summer or Fall Camp
$25,000 – Sponsor a new We Are Ocean racing canoe
$2,500 – Sponsor a camper
$1,000 – Sponsor a local day adventure
The gala also featured a lively auction with items such as signed surfboards, outdoor adventure kits, wellness baskets, jewelry, and sports memorabilia—each one helping raise critical funds for upcoming camps and ocean experiences.
A Community That Shows Up
Theevent was made possible through the generosity of families, foundations, local businesses, and longtime NAC supporters. From food provided by Blake’s Place BBQ, A Restaurant, and Vibe Kitchen to the many sponsors who contributed beverages, services, and auction items, the evening reflected the deep community roots behind We Are Ocean’s mission.
Perpetuating the Stoke
At its heart, the Sea of Support Gala is more than a fundraiser—it is a gathering of people who believe in the healing power of the ocean and the strength found in shared adventure. As one message of gratitude expressed, “Together, we can perpetuate the stoke.”
With every donation, every sponsorship, and every voice raised in support, the NAC community helps ensure that cancer fighters and survivors continue to experience the joy, challenge, and transformation that only the ocean can offer.
