Two of Newport Aquatic Center’s own Masters Women’s rowers, Colleen Kolling (member since 2012) and Deborah Cowles (member since 1987), have earned the coveted title of World Champion. Competing at the 2025 World Rowing Masters Regatta (WRMR) in Banyoles, Spain, from September 10–14, the pair joined forces with the Chinook Racing Team to take on the world’s best.
The event took place at the historic Estany de Banyoles regatta course, a breathtaking natural venue known for its geological and ecological significance. Banyoles has long been a centerpiece of international rowing — hosting the 1992 Olympic Games, 2009 World Rowing Cup I, 2004 Adaptive World Rowing Championships, and multiple Junior and World Rowing Championships.
Among 477 teams, the Chinook Racing Team stood out not just for their results but for their spirit. With only 18 women competing across five age categories, they raced against powerhouse teams — including teams from Brazil (2nd Place) and Scotland (3rd Place), each with roughly three times their roster size. Through grit, unity, and relentless drive, they advanced through fields stacked up to eight heats deep.
When the final results were tallied, Chinook Racing stood proudly at the top — earning the Women’s Masters World Champion Team Points Trophy.
For Deborah, the victory carries a particularly profound meaning. “The last time I was chasing this was for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona,” she reflected. “I didn’t get to realize that dream then. Now, standing here as a World Champion, it’s a dream fulfilled — proof that it’s never too late.”
For Colleen, the World Championship was really something special. She says, “I decided years ago that I would see the World through rowing. The hard work gives back in many ways. Every year, I build friendships with other rowers from all over the world. We have an amazing community.”
Deborah and Colleen also shared their deep gratitude for their training partners and supporters at NAC, whose dedication made this achievement possible. “We couldn’t have done it without the crew who showed up at dawn, ready to jump into any seat, in any boat, no matter what,” they said. Special thanks go out to Dana Mack, NAC Junior Coach Cierra Bird, Katie Persley, Carrie Chamberlain, Junior Rower Sydney Chait, Wendy O’Brien, and Hellen Frykmen, as well as everyone who filled in and shared the boat when they didn’t have to.
They also extend heartfelt thanks to NAC Junior Rowing Coach Janet, whose equipment guidance and support helped them prepare for the world stage.
Now, the pair is keeping the momentum going as they set their sights on an international goal for 2026 in Bled, Slovenia, where the next World Rowing Masters Regatta will take place.
From the waters of Newport to the world stage, Kolling and Cowles continue to embody what NAC athletes are made of — dedication, teamwork, and an enduring love for the sport.
