The Hal Rosoff Classic Returns This Saturday, 2/14/2026
We Honor a Legend — The 30th Annual Hal Rosoff Classic
There’s something special about February at the Newport Aquatic Center — it means the Hal Rosoff Classic is here.
This Saturday, February 14, paddlers, rowers, and the extended NAC community will gather once again for one of our favorite race days of the season. This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate the 30th annual Hal Rosoff Classic — the longest-running race at the Newport Aquatic Center.

For three decades, this event has brought the NAC community together to celebrate racing, tradition, and the people who helped build the foundation of our programs. These smaller NAC races are an important part of supporting the outrigger program, helping keep the team strong, accessible, and growing.
Whether you’re racing, volunteering, coaching, or cheering from the beach, you’re part of what makes this day special.
Who Was Hal Rosoff?
Hal Rosoff was a passionate supporter of the Newport Aquatic Center, the boathouse community, and the sport of outrigger canoe racing. His generosity, leadership, and belief in community helped shape the culture that continues to define NAC today.
A prominent Orange County restaurateur and philanthropist, Hal was the owner of the Back Bay Rowing & Running Club Restaurant, a gathering place that reflected his love for food, people, and the waterfront community.

His impact extended far beyond the dining room. Hal was recognized by the Daily Pilot as one of the “103 Most Influential People” in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, honoring his lasting contributions to the region.
One of Hal’s most meaningful initiatives was spearheading a kitchen distribution facility that collected excess food from area restaurants to help feed those in need — a reflection of his deep commitment to caring for the community around him.
A Stanford University graduate (Class of 1952), Hal combined entrepreneurial spirit with generosity and vision. His legacy lives on through the people, programs, and traditions he helped support — including this race that proudly carries his name.
