San Diego Lao Dragon Boat Race Recap: Windy, Wavy, and Worth It

Despite overcast skies and a solid breeze sweeping through all day, our team showed up and showed out at the San Diego Lao Dragon Boat Race! The conditions were no joke—sustained winds of 8–10 mph in the morning with gusts climbing even higher in the afternoon—but thanks to the dedication and team spirit of every paddler, we had an incredible time and a successful day on the water.

What made it all come together? Simple: our people.
Everyone was on time, ready, and dialed in for every single race—honestly, that alone deserves a medal!

Special Shoutouts:

  • Kathryn & Cathy — Absolute rockstars on the steering oars, handling heavy winds and tricky tides like pros.

  • Elizabeth, Skylar & Karen — Our fearless drummers! Not only did they keep us in rhythm, but they stayed firmly planted on those wildly shaky drummer seats. Impressive.

  • Tom W. — Expertly managed our boat lineup and seating assignments.

  • Jeannette — Offered smart strategy and insight on seating to help us paddle our best.

  • Ken — Took the reins on gear and setup, making sure we had everything we needed.

  • Erica — The unsung hero who unearthed the elusive race results link (seriously clutch).

  • Frank, Ron & Sabrina — Our on-land support crew! From guarding gear to cheering loudly, we couldn’t have done it without you.

All in all, windy races and all, it was a fantastic day of teamwork, laughter, and paddling power. Can’t wait to hit the water again soon!
